Careers

The Careers Department aims to provide all the help and information needed by each individual boy. To ensure that no-one is missed out, all boys undertake the ISCO Morrisby tests at the beginning of the Upper 5th year. A professional advisor from Connexions is resident in the School one day per week. Boys in the Upper Fifth and Lower Sixth forms are given the opportunity to have a one to one interview with this advisor. An advisor is also available at Parents’ Evenings for the Lower 5th and older age groups.

Above this safety-net of interviews there is a policy of open access. Individual members of the School staff specialise in different areas, and all boys are encouraged to approach staff for individual attention at any time.

Advice on selecting University Degree Courses is provided in the Sixth Form. Work experience courses are available through ISCO during holiday time and boys in the Upper Fifth take part in a mandatory one-week Work Experience placement with an employer of their choice. This takes place after the public examinations period. Termly visits are made by the Schools’ Liaison Officers of all the Armed Services. They work closely with the Careers staff here, interviewing, arranging courses and preparing candidates for officer selection board interviews.

The careers reference library contains a wealth of upto-date information on both careers topics and higher education. It is located in the Careers Department area, on the mezzanine of the Sixth Form Centre and is freely available to all boys. Further material is available in the main school library in the Masefield Centre. All boys also have access to professional Careers Education and Guidance software to assist at options stages and in selecting possible career paths.
