Latin is taught to all boys in the Lower 4th and Upper 4th years using the Cambridge Schools’ Latin Course, which Warwick School helped to pioneer. The principal aim is to develop competence in reading Latin so that as quickly as possible a selection of original literature may be understood and appreciated. Confidence and fluency in translation are encouraged by carefully graded reading-matter and interest is stimulated by topics suited to the boys’ ages, with much emphasis being laid on Roman culture and civilization by means of the presentation and discussion of audio-visual material.

In the Lower 5th year all boys have the option of continuing Latin and subsequently choosing it for GCSE. Greek may also be started by those who have shown themselves to have the appropriate linguistic ability. A three year course to GCSE is followed, whose aims are similar to those of the Latin course.

The option of Classical Civilization is also available in this year for those wishing to continue their interest in Greek and Roman civilization, but without further study of the languages. It can lead to a two year GCSE
course.

In the Sixth Form Greek, Latin and Classical Civilization can be studied at ‘A’ level.
