English
The teaching of English aims to develop, throughout a wide range of ability, each pupil’s potential, and to equip him with skills that will be required in other areas of study. It is also hoped that pupils will acquire
tastes and interests that will sustain them in their future lives. Boys are encouraged to speak confidently and listen attentively; to write in a variety of styles; and to read widely with understanding and enjoyment.
The course is intended to develop critical discrimination in the older pupil, and to stimulate intelligent analysis at all levels. The department
encourages creative writing and there is a record of frequent success in public essay competitions. There are theatre trips to Stratford-upon-Avon, London and elsewhere.
There are clubs and societies which encourage the enjoyment of film, participating in writing for competition entries and for publication, and the valuable arts of public speaking and debating. We liaise closely with Drama, the Library, guest speakers, and curriculum support, to ensure that students have the greatest opportunities to discover and develop English skills in a range of social and academic contexts.
Increasingly, too, modern technology, film and the media allow students to investigate and create forms of English central to their lives and to an understanding of their world. Nonetheless, books, literary study in all
genres and creative and critical writing, form the core of our teaching and provide fine results in English and English Literature examinations.
In the Middle 5th, boys begin a two-year course of study which, for most, will result in GCSE qualifications in English, and in English Literature.
In the Sixth Form, there are usually two or three classes in English
Literature. Pupils study a wide range of literary texts in all genres, from Chaucer to contemporary poetry.
Pupils who wish to study English Literature for just one year, as an AS, are very welcome. Students are also encouraged to attempt the Advanced Extension Award, for which specialist teaching is offered.
Our aim is to produce success in public examinations for pupils who are widely read, independent in judgment, and mature in outlook.
