History
The teaching of History aims to develop each boy’s natural interest in, and understanding of, the past. In the first three years we broadly follow, and aim to improve, upon the National Curriculum, Key Stage 3. The course strikes a balance between studying the required periods of History from the Norman Conquest to the 20th Century, and developing the skills which enable the individual to pursue his own research and to reach his own conclusions.
Boys may choose to take GCSE History and study the EDEXCEL syllabus ‘World History: 1914 to the Present Day’. The course provides an excellent introduction to the contemporary world.
The course for AS History involves taking a module on Henry VII and one on The American Revolution. At A2, boys undertake an individual study of their choice and study Nazi Germany in great depth. The emphasis of Sixth Form teaching is upon developing the individual’s ability to argue for his views in discussion and to present convincing arguments. Two of the six modules will involve coursework: one will involve the reputation of Alfred the Great or Richard III, the other slavery and civil rights in the United States from c1858 to c1970, or The Crusades. These skills of problem-solving and presentation will be universally useful in later life.
