Les Miserables

There was a great buzz in the foyer of the Bridge House Theatre on Monday night as a packed audience gathered for the gala performance of Les Miserables. This collaborative production with The King’s High School was arguably the most ambitious drama project ever undertaken by the school. Many in the audience wondered whether it would be the best production in the school’s history. It was undoubtedly a triumph and the audience was left marvelling at the first rate performances of the cast. Not one of you who have watched any of the school productions in recent years will be surprised to hear that Harry Benfield was marvellous, that Josh Bluteau’s superlative voice gave great depth to the character that he was playing and that supremely strong performances were given by Alex Piggins, James Parris, David Thompson, Harry Heap, and indeed every member of the cast. The talented musicians were terrific and the technical, costume and set crews behind the scenes made apparent light work of the formidable organisational and logistical hurdles.

The most satisfying success ,I believe, takes place when teams are involved. It doesn’t matter whether the success is academic, public speaking, sporting, musical or cultural. Being a part of something bigger than we can achieve on our own and therefore being able to share in a collective triumph is, I believe, important for all of us.

Squash

Last night the team played in the U15 event at Wolverhampton. Nick Williams, Dan Oates and Sam Gill made their debuts for the school and were beaten convincingly by more experienced players. Jon Byrd was far too good for his opponent, while Tristan Appleton playing at 1 played in the only real contest. Tristan probably had the more powerful shots but his opponent’s speed about court and better overall fitness won the match to make the final result 4-1 to Wolverhampton.

Fencing

Last Wednesday two teams of fencers went across to the Birmingham Centre of Excellence for a match against their fencers.
Both the Epee team and the Foil team came away victorious.

Tom Ash had a very good day fencing in the under 17’s Epee event at Millfield School at the weekend
Despite a slow start, Tom went from strength to strength and in a tense final he came from 14-11 behind to win 15-14. He wins a thoroughly well deserved gold medal.

Golf

The Golf team began their National cup competition with an exciting victory over Solihull School. The top pair of Captain Tim Austin and Charles James won their match comfortably being 4 up with 3 to play.
2nd pair of Miles Furnace and David Rogers narrowly lost their match so it was left to the third pair , Tom Hoare and Sam Gill, both making their School team debuts. They managed to cope with the pressure and won their match on 17th green by being 2 up with 1 to play. An excellent start and we wish the team luck in the next round against Worksop College.

Hockey

The 3rd XI hockey team beat Bishop Vesey’s 3 - 1 and the 2nd XI lost 3 - 0, but the hockey 1st XI recorded their best win of the season so far, with a 5 - 1 victory over Bishop Vesey’s School last week, with a goal each for Henry Seal, and Joe Melly and a well deserved hat-trick scored by the hard working Max Jennings.

Rugby v KES Birmingham

Dave Askew led out the Warwick 1st XV against King Edwards School Birmingham. Warwick started brightly with the new systems working well to put away Richard Wilson scoring the first try of the day. Warwick continued to dominate the first half of play with the forwards creating a strong platform and turning over opposition ball, resulting in effective counter attacking allowing Sam Miller score three tries. The half time score was 34-0 to Warwick.

Under 16’s debutants Teddy Edwards, Peter Morse and Josh Collier put in strong performances suggesting they have a bright future in Warwick School Rugby.

The final score was 48-0 to Warwick

2XV vs KES Birmingham

Won 59-10

The 2XV put in their best performance of the season to defeat KES Birmingham 59-10. The renewed aggression and intensity levels by the team saw them control the possession in attack and look threatening from many different areas of the pitch.

Outstanding players for the team were Sam Faulkes, David Rogers, Tolga Necar and James Higgins but man of the match was Sam Wright who looked threatening whenever he had the ball in hand.

3XV
71-0 win, a great performance the boys played a very expansive game making the most of every opportunity given to them.
Great individual performance from Rob Howard scoring a hatrick, Chris wood with a interception and Andy Rapley showing great strength at the breakdown

U16 ‘A’
The U16s won 43 –5 with a very strong perforamce both in defence and in attack.

U13 ‘A’
the U13As won 24-0. The forwards had to work hard against the massive opposition pack in order to secure enough ball for Warwick’s talented backline. Whenever the ball went wide Warwick looked threatening and tries were scored by Josh Hickman, Aleem Iqbal and two by Miles Dean. Full back Conor Klapatyj pulled off 4 outstanding last-ditch tackles to keep the opposition scoreless.
