The Department does all its teaching in a building equipped with two satellite dishes, with audio and video cassette recorders, television and projection facilities in each of its 8 rooms. There is a new digital language laboratory. We have a technician and two assistants, one for French, one for Spanish.
At present all boys study French throughout the first three years. The principles of the National Curriculum are followed, and French is the main medium of instruction. Emphasis is given throughout to the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. We do still aim for accuracy in writing! In the Middle 5th and Upper 5th year all boys follow a course in one or more Modern Foreign Languages, one of which is compulsory.
In the Upper 4th year boys take up German and Spanish for half a year per language. Thereafter, they may continue with one or the other language. French, German and Spanish are offered at A level. A one year course is offered in the Lower Sixth in Japanese and Chinese. French, German or Spanish form a part of the General Studies A level and tuition is provided within the General Studies programme.
The aim is to integrate ICT and Modern Language skills where possible. Language learning is related to an awareness of the culture and life of the countries where the languages are spoken. To this end, we offer each year trips and exchanges are planned which boys and parents are encouraged to support. There are a number of Modern Language clubs which enable both junior and senior boys to broaden their horizons.
