Music
At Warwick School we put music at the heart of each boy’s social, intellectual and spiritual development, providing a warm, welcoming environment in which students can build their musical skills and grow into confident, cultured young men.
We are proud to be a centre of excellence, offering a wide variety of outstanding orchestras, bands, choirs and ensembles to suit all ages, styles and abilities. Boys are encouraged to fulfil their academic and musical potential; a gift they can enjoy for the rest of their lives.
The Music Department has a staff of 37 highly skilled performers and teachers. Every week they give over 700 instrumental lessons on every conceivable musical instrument. Each academic year over 300 boys take Music Examinations, many achieving Grade 8 with Distinction and advance toward a Diploma in Music Performance.
We have a wide variety of award winning ensembles available, designed to suit each student’s interests and abilities. We believe that playing in a musical ensemble is beneficial to a student’s musical and social development.
All boys receive class music lessons during their first two years at the school, including practical sessions using the keyboards in the recently refurbished Computer Lab.
In addition to their academic music lessons, all boys in year 7 have the opportunity of learning an orchestral instrument. The Lower Fourth Music Scheme, which is unique to Warwick School, aims to inspire all pupils to gain a life-long appreciation of music.
We currently teach the iGCSE music course. Boys study Western Music from the Baroque Period to the present day, World Music and a set work. The examination is divided into three categories: Performance (30%), Composition (30%), and Listening (40%).
At AS and Advanced Level, students continue to develop their skills in the three key areas of Performing, Composing and Listening. History, Analysis and Western Tonal Harmony are studied in greater depth through these components, preparing boys for any Higher Education courses they may wish to follow in Music.
