Alex Selected for the World Scout Jamboree 2023

In the Summer of 2023, I will be attending the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea, along with 50,000 other Scouts from around the world.

The WSJ takes place over 3 weeks, two of which are at the Jamboree site, with one week at an event before or after the Jamboree, including a visit to Seoul.  A selection day was held last November to choose the 45 participants from Warwickshire, and I feel very lucky to have been chosen. I did not know anyone who was selected in advance, but there are four training weekends before the WSJ to give everyone a chance to get to know each other, learn some required skills, and to bond as a Unit.

Attending the WSJ will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I am really looking forward to meeting Scouts from all over the World, all of whom will have a story to tell, and learning about other cultures. I will also learn many useful skills, such as teamwork, leadership and communication, as well as skills such as phrases in other languages, camping for an extended period of time and cooking for many people. There will be a wide range of adventurous outdoor activities available, and there will also be a focus on the environment and how our generation can make the world a better place. I know that I will benefit from, and reflect on, this experience throughout my life.

Being a member of 2nd Warwick Sea Scouts has given me the skills and confidence to apply to be part of the WSJ. The group is currently raising funds to renovate our old Scout Hut in St. Nicholas Park into a fully functioning boathouse. As part of the fundraising there is currently an online auction running for Jimmy Gopperth’s Wasps rugby shirt signed by the current Wasps squad. If you are interested you can find this and our Platinum Jubilee raffle on our Facebook page linked here.
