Rugby, hockey, skiing, fencing, tennis and swimming... it's all go this term!

We've seen some excellent performances across all year groups in Sport this term.

Rugby

The Rugby season is now well underway, and we have had a fantastic few weeks so far. Over 450 pupils have represented the school, including 90 from Year 7.

The Year 7 Year group is looking strong and the A team are currently unbeaten – They look like a group with great potential.  The U13s As beat Stamford and the Bs are currently unbeaten, and this is another year with lots of strength in depth.

The U14A team beat Whitgift 12 tries to 2, but then let the lead slip against Berkhamsted ending up in a draw, but they learnt a lot from the game. The U16A team put in an outstanding performance to defeat Millfield on the 1XV pitch in a really close game – final score 22-19.  The U16Bs won a nail biter against MCS Oxford’s A team on Saturday with Ryan Taylor scoring the match winning penalty to secure victory 30-27.

The 2ndXV have carried on their strong start to the season defeating Denstone 29-5, a score line that included a hat-trick from Jeevan. The 3rd XV and 4th XV both won well against Berkhamsted School and the 3rd XV defeated MCS Oxford 2ndXV 50 points to 10 last weekend.

The 1stXV bounced back from a defeat to Berkhamsted by beating Rugby School in the first round of the National Cup. The team are determined to emulate the success of previous teams in what is always a really tough competition. Despite being 29-7 down, they came back heroically scoring a try with the last play of the match that meant the final score was 36-36... and according to the competition rules this result means they will progress into the last 16 where they will meet Oakham School next week.

Hockey

The hockey season is now well under way and there have been some excellent performances across all the year groups.

The senior teams have played KES Birmingham, Solihull, KES Stratford and Bromsgrove.  The 1st team won against KES Birmingham, but lost against a very strong Solihull and Bromsgrove teams although the matches have helped prepare the team for their first National cup group game against Millfield today.

The U14A team started the season well with a win against KES Stratford and a draw against Solihull and the U15B and U14C team have won all of their games. On Monday last week, Harrison Mills scored all the goals for the U15C against KES Stratford's B team in thier 4-0 win.

The U13 teams had a mixed set of results against Solihull, but the D team secured a great result after showing real determination in the 2nd half time to win 2-1. Last week the B,C,D and E team competed against KES Stratford producing some excellent hockey and winning all of their matches.

At U12 level both A and B teams beat Solihull with Seb scoring a hat Trick in the B team match. These victories were followed up with a great team display against Bablake U13s where they won all four matches of the mini tournament. The U12C and D team who were playing Bablake A ad B teams also went unbeaten on the day.

Well done to all the boys who have represented school hockey teams so far this season.

Ski Racing

The ski racing season has started well with pupils of all ages attending training sessions to hone their racing skills. Impressively our U12, U14 and U16 teams have all qualified for the National ESSKIA finals being held in Norwich this weekend. We wish those involved the best of luck as they take on some of the best slalom skiers in the country.

Fencing

Two weekends ago, three Old Warwickians returned to school to take part in a fencing match against our three most experienced fencers. The old boys team was very strong as it included two past captains, and as a result they won a convincing 45 to 24, but it was a good event and something we hope to repeat in the future.

Tennis

On Thursday, 22 September the U15 A’s played against Bromsgrove in the National Cup. The team, made up of Harrison, Joshua, Adam and Ned played some great Tennis with, Ned winning his singles match in a tie-break. Adam and Ned also won their doubles match against highly ranked opponents. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to win the tie, but it was a valiant effort to start the year of Tennis.

Golf

Last week the Golf team won the first round of the HMC Foursomes, 3-0 against Abingdon School. Played at Frilford Heath Golf Club on the Red Course the boys played fantastically well to beat an evenly matched team on their home course. We look forward to seeing who we draw in the next round. Well done to team.

Swimming

Last week the swim team returned to the pool for their first action of the season, taking part in the qualifying round of the English Schools Swimming Association, Senior Schools Relay Championships.

Our U18 team of Louis, Ruben, Jason and Charlie produced two strong performances, posting a time of 1.55:10 for the Medley and 1.41:49 for the Freestyle relay.

Our U15 team of Ned, Will, Zack, Charlie and new arrival Joe, excelled themselves, edging out Repton in both races, posting exceptional times of 1.59 for the Medley and 1.46 for the freestyle relay.

Our U13 team of Jude, Seb, Will and Jacob took part in their first event for the school. Undeterred by the level of competition, all our boys produced encouraging performances, giving them plenty to aim at in the future.

We await the announcement of the national rankings to confirm that our teams have achieved a place in the Grand Finals hosted at the Olympic Pool in London later in the year.
