A day in the life of a Junior School boy
A typical day at Warwick Junior School can take a variety of shapes and sizes! Whether they are participating in one of our 80 clubs or societies or learning a new instrument, your child will always be guaranteed to have a fun-packed day.
In the morning, boys generally arrive at school at around 7.50am, if they are taking part in a club or society. We have a variety of clubs and societies that start before school, a perfect chance to get their brain working before the school bell rings! Performing arts and music are the most common. On Thursdays, our Big Choir is usually a highlight of the day for everyone involved. 160 young voices come together to sing a variety of music including pop, folk, classic and show tunes, and will share their hard work at several big performances throughout the year. Furthermore, our boys have the opportunity to take part in 10+ ensemble types, with an option for everybody. To read more, visit our ensembles page here.
When the school bell rings, boys head to their allocated tutor groups for 8.40am, where they are welcomed into the day by their Form Tutor. This looks slightly different for both ages of the school, Lower and Upper. Lower School boys (Year 3 and 4) stay with their Form Tutor all day, who will teach them and guide them through all subjects. In the Upper School (Year 5 and 6), the boys will be taught by specialist subject staff in different rooms. We ensure that all boys follow a broad and balanced curriculum. Subjects include art, computing, design and technology, languages, geography, history, music, performing arts, PSHE and religious education.
Boys have sport on their timetable consisting of both PE and games. Individual classes have one double period of Physical Education a week, taught by members of the PE department. Each year group also have a designated Games afternoon, delivered by both PE teachers and Junior school games staff. PE tends to have a more training focus, while games allows boys to put their work into practice. Sports on offer vary depending on time of year and season. For example rugby is most commonly played in the winter, whilst cricket is played in summer. To read a list of all sports, visit here.
After a morning of lessons, boys will deserve a hard-earned half and hour break which they take mid-morning. A highlight of many boys day is lunchtime, where they are provided with multiple options for a nutritious lunch to get them through the day. Have a look at a sample menu here!
After a full afternoon of more lessons, the end of the day means that boys can go to their after-school clubs or activities. Our 80 clubs and societies include:
- Music: Big Choir, Guitar Group, Hand Bells, Junior Jazz, Orchestra, Rock Band, String Orchestra
- Creativity and the Arts: Book Club, British Sign Language, Cookery, Digital Photography, Lego
- Sports and Games: Card Games, Chess, Football Club, Golf, Kung Fu, Street Dance, Yoga and Mindfulness
- Science and Technology: Buggy Builders, Code Club, Maths in Motion, Young Engineers
Homework is set by form tutors or individual subject teachers but is created in a balanced way that allows all boys to have a well earned rest after school.
