Memories from Year 6

As we begin to say farewell to our Year 6 pupils, we take the opportunity to reflect on the achievements and experiences that have shaped their time at the Junior School. From favourite lessons and lasting friendships to memorable trips and moments of personal growth, their reflections capture what has made their journey so special. We invited a number of boys to share their favourite memories and what they will cherish most as they prepare for their exciting next chapter.

"It’s all good and well learning academically, but to truly unleash your full potential you have to learn about yourself and, through the Junior School’s co-curricular programme, I’ve done just that.

To be honest, I’m not the most sporty of people, especially with things like contact rugby – I can’t bring myself to charge at people.  But I took part in a tag rugby festival and I discovered that, because it had been adapted to include everyone, I actually found playing rugby enjoyable and I never thought I’d say that!"

"The Junior School has really helped me to come into my own.  When I came into the Junior School, I didn’t really know what I liked to do but through co-curricular activities and meeting friends, I’ve found more things that interest me and that I’d like to do in the future. In Year 3, I wanted to fit in and do exactly what my friends did, but during my time at the Junior School, I’ve learnt that I can still be myself and be appreciated for who I am and what I enjoy."

One of the really good things about the Junior School is that you don’t have to be the best or most dedicated at sport or music or in lessons to have your skills and efforts recognised, acknowledged and encouraged.

"If I were to sum up my time in the Junior School in one word, it would be motivating. I started very nervously, despite coming from the prep. However, I quickly found my place, by challenging myself. I joined a range of clubs, like LAMDA, and I take piano lessons, both of which I am on grade three for. I even tried some new clubs, like fencing. One other thing I’ve enjoyed is the residentials, my personal favourite being the Year 6 one. I had some amazing first-hand experiences, like going down a slate mine, gorge walking and abseiling!

My two favourite subjects are English and history, both of which help with my story writing in English lessons. I have been taught these incredible subjects by some of the amazing teachers here! Personally, my self-confidence has grown a lot, and I have found my voice in class. Finally, achieving my Platinum diploma and becoming a Prefect have been highlights this year. I plan to continue on this path into the Senior School, always remembering the motto of this school, ‘Altiora Peto’!!"

"I joined in Year 5 and made lots of friends quickly.  Some of my favourite things were competing in the Aquathlon and going on residentials.  I particularly enjoyed the Year 6 residential to Plas-y-Brenin – my highlight was climbing Snowdon, when I reached the summit, all I could say was ‘Wow!’.  I also enjoyed going on the rugby tour.  Clubs have also been fun to take part in. My favourites were Young Engineers and Buggy Builders."

"Since joining Warwick Junior School in Year 6, I quickly realised the Junior School was welcoming, full of opportunities, kindness and fun.

I’ve particularly enjoyed the sporting opportunities, filling my week with hockey, rugby, cricket swimming and water polo. My first cricket fixture against Bilton Grange, in the torrential rain, was a highlight!

The music concerts I’ve been able to take part in have been a real experience – I’ll never forget joining my first ever rock band and performing with the choir at Young Voices is a memory of my time in Year 6 that will stick with me as one of my best.

I also loved the rugby tour to Cardiff; it was daunting at first as it was only a few weeks since I’d arrived at my new school but I was soon put at ease getting involved in all the activities.

The plays, music, learning and friendships have made this year truly memorable and I’m grateful to call Warwick Junior School my weekday home!

My favourite memories have always been made on the residentials. A few days away for team-building, making friends and enjoying incredible activities. From Year 3, hanging out on the low ropes, to Year 6, at Plas-y-Brenin, exploring down the mine, the residentials never fail to be the highlight of everyone’s year. One of my most vivid memories was in Snowdonia, clambering up the gorge. I had freezing water in my wellies and the only thing that the four layers I’d put on that morning seemed to be doing, was weighing me down, as I was shivering. Looking around me, I saw that everyone else was, too. But we were all smiling, enjoying ourselves, taking on every challenge. And that is what makes residentials so special to me.
