Top questions to ask at a Sixth Form open event
Choosing a Sixth Form is an exciting milestone, and an open event is the perfect opportunity to discover what life is really like beyond the prospectus. This autumn, we will be hosting our whole school Open Morning on September 26, followed by dedicated Sixth Form events in October, giving prospective pupils and their families the chance to experience our Sixth Form community first-hand.
While exploring facilities and meeting teachers are important parts of your visit, asking thoughtful questions can help you gain a deeper understanding of the school's culture, academic support, and wider opportunities available beyond the classroom.
Our pupil-led tours enable you to hear direct from our current students, helping you gain valuable insights into everyday Sixth Form life. Here are some key questions we suggest you could ask to get the most out of your visit.
1. How much independent study is expected?
One of the biggest differences between GCSEs and A Levels is the increased emphasis on independent learning. Sixth Form students are expected to take greater responsibility for managing their studies, organising their time, and developing effective learning habits.
Ask current students how they balance lesson time with independent study and what support is available to help them make the transition. Their experiences can provide a realistic picture of what Sixth Form life looks like day to day.
2. How easy is it for new students to settle in?
This is an especially important question for pupils joining from another school. A welcoming Sixth Form should provide opportunities to build friendships, develop confidence, and become part of the wider community from the very beginning.
Ask pupils about their own experiences of joining the Sixth Form, how they made friends, and what support was available during their first few weeks. Their answers can offer valuable insight into the school's culture and sense of community.
3. What opportunities are available beyond the classroom?
A great Sixth Form experience extends beyond academic study. Enrichment opportunities help pupils develop leadership skills, broaden their interests, and build confidence.
You might ask about:
- Subject societies and academic competitions
- Guest speakers and educational visits
- The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
- Leadership roles and mentoring opportunities
- Volunteering and community initiatives
These experiences can play an important role in both personal development and future university or employment applications.
In addition, Warwick School was awarded a significant strength in its latest Educational Quality Inspection report for co-curricular excellence – a rare accolade that highlights an exceptional feature of the school's provision that goes well beyond expectations. You may wish to explore the range of activities available, such as:
- Sport and competitive fixtures
- Music ensembles, orchestras, choirs, and concerts
- Drama productions and performance opportunities
- The Combined Cadet Force (CCF)
- The Duke of Edinburgh's Award
- Debating, public speaking, and Model United Nations
- Volunteering and community partnerships
- Student-led clubs and societies
4. What careers and higher education support is available?
Sixth Form is an important stage in preparing for life after school. Understanding the guidance available can help pupils feel confident about their next steps.
Questions you could ask include:
- How are students supported with university applications?
- What guidance is available for degree apprenticeships?
- Are there opportunities to meet employers, universities, and alumni?
- What support is offered for competitive courses such as Medicine, Dentistry, Law, or Oxbridge applications?
- Do students receive interview preparation and careers advice?
These conversations can help you understand how the school supports pupils in achieving their ambitions beyond Sixth Form.
Make the most of your visit
An open event is your chance to hear directly from the people who know the school best. Don't be afraid to ask questions, explore different areas of the Sixth Form, and speak to both staff and pupils about their experiences.
The more conversations you have, the clearer your picture will be of what makes the Sixth Form unique and whether it feels like the right fit for you.
