Music

The Junior School Music Department is a vibrant, exciting place to be, both for the boys and the staff who teach them. The variety of music that spills out from rehearsal and practice rooms each day is second to none, and the boys are very proud of what they achieve.
Mrs Stefanie Glover, Head of Junior School Music
Pupils enjoy a weekly class music lesson, exploring topics such as Indian music, African drumming, reggae, rap, classical music and jazz through composition, performance and listening.
Individual music lessons are offered on a wide range of instruments by our experienced and dedicated instrumental teachers - many of whom work with students through to Sixth Form. Currently, over 180 pupils in the Junior School learn at least one musical instrument.
Pupils who play an instrument have the opportunity to become part of the school’s musical community, performing in our orchestra, string ensembles, brass clubs, rock bands and jazz bands as they grow in confidence. There is no shortage of opportunities for pupils in the Music Department, regardless of their level of experience. Having a shared Music centre with the Senior School gives our pupils the opportunity to work alongside staff and students performing at the highest level.
Year 3 Orchestral Instrument Project
All boys learn an orchestral instrument in Year 3 music lessons. This is the springboard to their musical development and the discovery of other instruments. With a rich array of groups and ensembles for boys to join, including our 50-piece orchestra; brass bands; jazz and rock groups; and classical guitar groups, there are plenty of opportunities to perform.
Performing opportunities
From the more informal teatime concerts to the showpiece end-of-term concerts in Warwick Hall, the musical life of the school is rich and varied. In recent years, our boys have performed in Westminster Abbey, the Royal Albert Hall, Coventry and Worcester Cathedrals, as well as going on to achieve excellence in national music finals.
Music within the Foundation
The Foundation has a number of unique partnerships that help to broaden the opportunities we provide pupils at the Junior School.
Orchestra of the Swan, who reside on our Myton Road campus, provides our pupils with having the chance to learn a variety of symphonic pieces, and perform them in concert, alongside pupils from other local schools in the Swan’s Primary Come and Play Day.
For pupils interested in becoming a chorister, through our partnership with St Mary’s Church in Warwick, pupils can apply for choral scholarship.
