Each and every week is different at Warwick Junior School as we provide a full range of opportunities, experiences and challenges for our pupils.  Sport, music and drama as well as a wide range of clubs and societies all contribute to the busy, varied and, above all, happy life of Warwick Junior School pupils. We encourage all our pupils to take up a range of clubs, learning new skills and developing their interests.

Drama

Drama productions are a highlight of life in the Junior School. All year groups enjoy performing small sketches and plays as part of the Performing Arts curriculum.  There are two main productions in the school year. Our Year 4 pupils perform their play in the Lent Term with our Year 6 pupils’ production in the Summer Term. Both productions are hosted in the school’s Bridge House Theatre. Warwick Junior School also offers LAMDA drama sessions each week after school.

Music

The Junior Music Department is a very busy, lively and rewarding part of Junior School life. The pupils have a weekly class music lesson, experiencing music topics such as Indian Music, African Drumming, Reggae, Rap, Classical Music and Jazz, through composition, performance and listening. In Year 3, the pupils all take part in the String Project. Every pupil learns the violin, viola, 'cello or mini bass as part of his class music lessons each week. This is to enable the pupils to experience all of the musical elements and music theory that they are taught, in a practical, enjoyable and fun way. 

Individual music lessons are offered on a wide range of instruments by our experienced instrumental teachers. We currently have over 180 pupils learning at least one musical instrument. 

We have a flourishing choir with over 120 participants. Recent concert venues have included Coventry Cathedral and our pupils also take part in the Young Voices Concert at the NEC.

 

Sport

Warwick Junior School pupils enjoy success and high achievements across a range of sports. We frequently field over 20 teams a week, providing opportunity for all pupils to represent the school.

The major team sports of rugby, football and cricket are taught with teams organised for inter-school, inter-house and inter-class matches.

Swimming, golf, tennis and athletics also provide the pupils with the occasion to learn and compete in competitive matches. All sports have after-school practices where the pupils benefit from specialist coaching.

The Junior School share the facilities and coaching staff of the Senior School, making the teaching and coaching of sport a most enjoyable experience for pupils and staff alike.

 

Trips and residential visits

The pupils enjoy a number of day trips to enrich and consolidate their understanding of all aspects of the curriculum. We also invite various organisations and individuals to provide workshops for the pupils. Recent examples include the Young Shakespeare Company, Urban Strides, and the School of Beatbox.

 Residential visits are key stepping stones to independence as the pupils learn to organise themselves for the day ahead. Our programme provides genuine opportunities for team building as pupils learn to value the contribution of others. The pupils develop many new skills becoming more confident and assertive.

Highlights of our programme currently include a three day residential in Years 3 and 4 leading to a bushcraft camping experience in Year 5. Our Year 6 pupils spend a week away in the Welsh mountains at Plas-y-Brenin, the National Mountain Centre. Following their entrance exams, the pupils will spend the week climbing, canoeing, gorge walking, and caving, as well as taking part in nighttime activities. The week provides many real challenges for the pupils, giving opportunities for leadership, teamwork, and personal growth.

Clubs and societies

We have around 80 clubs and societies, so there really is something for everyone. The clubs run before school, during lunchtime and after school.
