On Tuesday 24 March, the Warwick U15 boys travelled to Nottingham Hockey Centre to play in the finals day of the Inspiresport Independent Schools Hockey Cup, having successfully navigated a field of 84 competing schools. Their route to the finals showcased their quality and consistency, with strong victories over Stowe, Rugby, New Hall and Whitgift School.
In the semi-final, they faced Kings Chester and put in a solid performance to cruise into a 3-0 lead at half-time with two goals from Ellis and one from Ollie. They continued this form in the second half and two more goals followed before Kings Chester grabbed a couple of late goals to finish 5-2 to Warwick.
In the final, Warwick faced Millfield school and the game proved to be a cagey one. Warwick scored first after 10 minutes with a well worked short corner delivered by Digby and finished by Ollie. Millfield responded with sustained pressure, but Warwick held firm to protect their 1-0 advantage at half-time.
The second half followed a similar pattern as the first, with Warwick soaking up pressure and Millfield struggling to convert the pressure to chances. Warwick's resilience paid off when another short corner – touched in by Ollie after Ellis delivered a pinpoint pass – doubled the lead. Warwick then finished off with a sweeping move that started in their own half, with Henry crossing the ball for Jack to finish at the far post. This enabled Warwick to comfortably see out the last 10 minutes of the game in front of a jubilant set of supporters and parents.
This triumph marks the team’s second national success in three years, following their U13 England Hockey Cup win in 2024. It is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and teamwork shown by the players, supported by the guidance of coaches Mr Hobley, Mr Francis and Mr Hurst.
A huge congratulations to the entire squad – Warwick is immensely proud of your achievement.
