A promising start for our tennis 1st team

The Glanville Cup is the LTA National Schools U18 Boys Championship, a premier tennis competition in Great Britain for secondary school teams. As is becoming something of a tradition, our first team tennis squad were drawn against Rugby School in the first round of the competition.

Playing at home in challenging, windy conditions, the boys showed real resilience, stepping up when it mattered and battling hard throughout the fixture against Rugby School. Their efforts paid off with an impressive 5–1 overall victory, winning 10–2 in rubbers to secure their place in the next round.

In the singles, our 1st seed Seb faced a very tough opponent, narrowly losing a high-quality match 4–6, 4–6. Despite the result, it was a strong and competitive performance.

Matei, playing at 2nd seed, was clinical from the outset, producing a composed and confident display to win 6–1, 6–3. George followed with an outstanding performance at 3rd seed, dominating his match 6–0, 6–3. Harry, at 4th seed, showed great composure in a tight first set, edging it 6–4, before finishing strongly to take the second set 6–1.

Heading into the doubles, the team needed just one win to progress. Seb and Matei got off to a flying start, taking the first set 6–1. Rugby fought back in the second, pushing it to a tie-break, but strong serving from Seb and excellent net play from Matei saw them through to a well-earned victory.

George and Jonny then produced a superb doubles performance, sealing the overall win in style with a 6–1, 6–3 victory.

This is a very promising start to the 1st team’s cup campaign, and we look forward to seeing how they continue to progress in the next round.
