Music Award Holders' Concert

On Tuesday, 14 October the first Music Award Holders' Concert of the academic year was held.

As ever, the quality was of the very highest standard, showcasing some of our most experienced and outstanding musicians in the form of Ed L (trumpet), Charlie F (cello) and Kaiser W (violin) in the Upper Sixth, alongside offerings from younger brilliance in the form of Jayven Y (clarinet, Year 9).

Overseen by the inimitably brilliant Miss Hooker, the boys each took the stage and gave authoritative performances that were musically authentic and committed, with a particularly outstanding offering of Mendelssohn's challenging G minor Piano Trio, first movement, starring Aaden S (Upper Sixth) at the piano with fireworks coming out of his fingers!

Ed's sumptuous tone with the trumpet followed (he has recently been given a professional gig at St Mary's, well earned, for Remembrance Sunday - do go to hear him play!), with Jayven enthusing the audience with a clarinet sonata that feature gravity-defying leaps and jinky rhythms.

Aaden performed a full Mozart Piano Sonata with authority and fluency, and Charlie closed the concert with a highly virtuosic Hungarian folk-song piece of cello that showed off his skill at the instrument (it is of no surprise, and great delight, that he is pursuing a future as a professional cellist - he makes an utterly formidable sound).

An evening of absolutely stellar music making, and my thanks go to the boys for such an enjoyable occasion.

Do join us for the next one on 25 February, and if you can't wait until then, do come to one of our Drivetime Concerts or Lunchtime Recitals after half term for more wonderful music making from our talented boys; a warm and large audience is always well received and appreciated!
