Ocean conservationist visit to IT

To help improve Year 7’s digital literacy skills, the Computer Science department runs one lesson a fortnight dedicated to IT skills for the first year of KS3.
Over the last few months, Year 7 has made use of Canva, a creative digital media website that students use to create posters. Students were tasked with creating posters with an environmental theme, using the internet to find facts and figures surrounding different aspects of the impact us humans are having on our environment.
It was discovered that Zakia Rashid, a parent of a Warwick School pupil, is an ocean conservationist as well as an award-winning design and marketing professional. This was a perfect match for our Year 7 class, who were undertaking this exact work in class.
Zakia kindly attended Warwick School on the 18 March to speak with Year 7 during their normal IT class. Students were amazed at the work Zakia has done in the world’s oceans, with videos and pictures of her cleaning up plastic bags wrapped around corrals, all the way up to swimming with sharks! The boys were also given a lesson on how they can make a difference, and given some very useful information on creating impactful posters to help promote the worthy cause of cleaning up the ocean. Sam was especially inspired, creating a fantastic poster ready for hanging up in our new display in Q4.
A big thank you from 7B/IT to Zakia Rashid, as giving up her time really inspired our Year 7 class to make some amazing posters and appreciate and understand the importance of our world’s oceans.
