  • Mr Bond's week in review - 26 September

    Published 26/09/25

This week in assembly, I talked to the boys about Fairtrade Fortnight. Using the example of the humble banana, the boys learnt that as a country we eat 5 billion bananas a year. They also learnt about the banana supply chain and how farmers in the tropical regions don’t always receive a fair income. Linking to our current learning strength of Independence, we discussed how fairtrade helps provide farmers with a fairer wage, allowing them, and their communities, to become more independent.

The fixture programme was busy this week with the U9s and U11s playing rugby against Blue Coat and the U10 and U11 travelling to Stowe School. There was also a U9,10 and 11 swimming gala against Blue Coat.

The week finished with our Year 6 boys joining representatives from across our Foundation Schools at the Annual Foundation Service at St Mary’s Church in Warwick.

Last Friday, we announced our new House Captains and Vice Captains for the year, details of which can be found below. We also gave out our first Care, Courtesy and Consideration certificates to boys who have been recognised by staff as showing kindness to other members of the community. It was also a pleasure to give out my first Headmaster’s Commendations of the term, recognising those boys who have produced excellent work, made good progress or have demonstrated effort and commitment in the classroom.

    Wishing you a restful weekend,

    John Bond

  • House Charity Elections

    Published 25/09/25

Each year, all four Houses choose a charity with a slightly different focus. On Friday, 3 October, they will be deciding which charity they are going to support this year. This year the focuses will be as follows:

    • A local charity – Terra
    • A national charity - Ventis
    • An international charity – Ignis
    • An environmental / animal charity - Aqua

Any pupil within a House, can put forward a charity for their House to consider, so if you have a charity that you support as a family and it falls within the relevant category, please do nominate it.  Boys will need to give a short presentation to their House about the charity, the work it does and why it’s important.  Boys may wish to make a short powerpoint to present to their House – these should be emailed to their Form Tutor by 9am on Friday, 3 October.

We look forward to seeing a range of different charities nominated by the boys for us to raise money for over the course of the year.

  • A week of rugby at Warwick Junior School

    Published 25/09/25

It’s been a thrilling week of rugby for the Junior School, with pupils from Years 4 to 6 taking part in a variety of exciting fixtures and festivals that showcased their skills, teamwork, and sporting spirit.

The week kicked off on Monday with our U10 boys attending a Rugby Coaching Day hosted by the Senior School. The morning was filled with focused training sessions led by our outstanding Senior School coaches, followed by an afternoon festival where the boys put their learning into action. It was a fantastic opportunity to develop core skills and enjoy the game in a supportive environment.

On Tuesday, all of Year 4 played in a block fixture against Blue Coat. With the sun shining and a strong turnout of enthusiastic spectators, the boys delivered a spirited performance across all matches. It was wonderful to see every pupil involved and playing with such energy and enjoyment.

Wednesday saw our U11 and U10 teams travel to the prestigious Stowe Festival, where they faced some of the Midlands’ top rugby-playing prep schools. The competition was fierce, but the experience was invaluable. The boys showed great resilience and learnt a lot from playing against high-level oppositions.

Also on Wednesday, four other U11 teams took on Blue Coat, with our B team bravely matching up against their A team. It was a tough afternoon, but full of important lessons and moments of promise. The boys showed real character and determination throughout.

A huge thank you to all staff, hosts, and supporters for making this week such a memorable one for our young rugby players.

  • Mr Bond's week in review - 19 September

    Published 19/09/25

This week the boys have started to settle into the new term with academic lessons, a full co-curricular programme, and the first fixtures of the season.

We continued our focus on independence in assembly this week, how to face challenges and that asking for help is a key part of being more independent. I reminded the boys of the ‘Looking after Yourself’ posters which are displayed around school and can also be found in their Prep Diaries. If you have some time over the weekend, please do discuss this information with your son and stress the importance of talking to someone if they are ever worried about themselves or someone else.

The Year 3 boys joined the older boys in the clubs and extended day programme this week with a wide range of amazing activities on offer including Cartoon Club, Debating, Lego, Cookery, Running, Young Engineers, Chess and Kung Fu.

On Thursday, nine Year 6 boys joined girls from the Prep, members of PAWS and WPSA, as well as other members of the Foundation community in opening our new Outdoor Classroom. This is a wonderful resource which the boys and girls from the Prep and Junior School will benefit from in the years ahead. This was possible through the fantastic support of both schools’ Parent Associations.

The rugby season is starting to get into full swing with festivals for the U9s at RGS The Grange and two U11 squads at Bedford and Stamford. The Year 5 and 6 swimmers also enjoyed their first gala of the year against the Prep School.

In our Celebration Assembly this afternoon, we also announced the House Captains and Vice Captains for this academic year following their presentations to their houses over the last week. All the members of the house had a vote, and we look forward to presenting the successful candidates in next week’s newsletter.

  • New Outdoor Classroom

    Published 19/09/25

On Thursday, 18 September, we officially opened the new Outdoor Classroom. This is an amazing resource located in the Headmaster’s Garden for pupils from both the Junior School and Warwick Prep School to use.

The Garden is already used for a range of activities by both schools, including our own Warwick Outdoors Club, who have already grown some wonderful produce. However, the Outdoor Classroom now provides a great location for a wide variety of other lessons and activities. It also supports our sustainability drive as it has a wind turbine and solar panels!

Nine Year 6 boys who have already shown an interest in outdoor learning and sustainability joined Mr Bond, Mrs Dodsworth, girls from the Prep School, Mr Nicholson, members of the school community – past and present, and representatives from the Junior School (PAWS) and Warwick Prep School (WPSA) Parent Associations to ‘cut the ribbon’.

Both parent associations deserve our thanks and appreciation for supporting this project so enthusiastically, and we would also like to thank all our parents who have supported the various fundraising activities over the recent terms.

  • Mr Bond's week in review - 12 September

    Published 12/09/25

It has been a great start to the new school year. The boys have approached school life with enthusiasm and this week we have seen them start to settle into the new routines and lessons. Well done especially to all those boys who have joined the Junior School this term.

In assembly this week, I reminded the boys of the Warwick School motto, Altiora Peto, to aim for higher things. At the Junior School we encourage all the boys to improve academically, physically, artistically and personally by reflecting on our school learning strengths, the attributes we value in helping us be better learners and better human beings.

The eight learning strengths are independence, resilience, creativity, focus, empathy, reflectiveness, responsibility and communication. Over the next four weeks, we will be focusing on supporting the boys in developing their independence. Please do support us at home by encouraging the boys to be more independent in preparing for their day in school, knowing their arrangements, collecting their belongings at the end of the day and hopefully also completing some tasks around the home without being asked!

It was wonderful to welcome so many parents into school over the last week starting with the Year 3 BBQ last Friday and the Meet the Teachers event last Tuesday. For those parents who couldn’t attend ‘Meet the Teachers’ you can find the presentations on the school portal.

Please do take some time to read through today’s copy of The Bear. Every week, we include updates regarding upcoming events and activities, reports on sports fixtures, reminders and news from across the Foundation. As always, if you have any questions, please contact the school office.

Thank you for all your support of your sons during what has been a busy start to the school year, and I wish you all a restful weekend.

  • Ignis House Charity Day

    Published 04/07/25

Last Friday, Ignis held their Charity Day raising money for Cancer Research. To help raise money, the boys were encouraged to wear blue, pink or spots into school. They also collected coins in a penny line around the school. This eventually measured over 64 metres! Ignis House also held a Market for Cure in the afternoon, selling donations from our school families and running games. It was a fantastic event and thank you to all the boys and staff who helped make the day a success. The overall total raised was a phenomenal £1174.22! Well done everyone!

  • Mr Bond's week in review - 4 July

    Published 03/07/25

This week was ‘Belonging Week’ at Warwick School, and it has been wonderful to take part in a number of events where members of the school community have come together.

On Monday, Year 5 and 6 took part in their annual Sports Day. In very warm conditions, the boys demonstrated great determination and team spirit in competing in different races and activities to earn points for their House. On Tuesday it was the turn of Years 3 and 4 who performed fantastically well in a number of different races and activities. The traditional House tug-of-war brought each day to a close and was a further example of teamwork and team spirit.

On Wednesday, we held our Year 6 Leavers’ Chapel Service. This was an important opportunity for the boys to reflect on their time in the Junior School. The boys shared their memories, wrote and read the prayers and sung their chosen hymns with great enthusiasm.

Year 6 again demonstrated the value of teamwork as they presented their Young Enterprise Projects on Thursday afternoon, and the Bake Off contestants worked tirelessly on Friday morning in the finals of the Junior School Bake-Off.

I would like to remind all parents that they are invited to the Junior School Prize Giving at 2pm on Wednesday, 9 July. If you have not already registered your interest in attending using the form sent out previously, then please contact the school office.

Please also read the article in the newsletter regarding the recent Ignis Charity Day - the event raised an incredible amount of money. Thank you to everyone who donated.

  • Summer Reading Challenge

    Published 02/07/25

The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic, fun, free way that our boys can continue to progress with and enjoy their reading over the Summer Holidays whilst our Junior School Library is closed. You can participate in local libraries and online from now until 30 September.

    What is it?
The UK’s biggest reading for pleasure programme for primary school children in libraries, encouraging children to read for fun during the school holidays. The Challenge is open to all children aged 4–11, and is designed to be accessible for all reading levels. This year's theme is "Story Garden", and children are being encouraged to let their imagination blossom and explore creativity, storytelling and the magic of books.

    When is it?
The Challenge takes place during the summer holidays in most UK public libraries, starting on 5th July and lasting through until 30th September. Children can sign up in-person at their library or online at summerreadingchallenge.org.uk at any time during the Challenge. Do please check local start and end dates with your library service.

    What does the Challenge involve?

    • At the library: A child visits their local public library to sign up and pick up a Summer Reading Challenge booklet. They set a reading goal and borrow books of their choice. They collect bespoke stickers and incentives from the library for their reading, including a certificate for reaching their reading goal.
    • Online: Alternatively, children can take part in the Challenge online at summerreadingchallenge.org.uk from 20th June until 30th September, where they will set a reading goal and unlock digital rewards including a PDF certificate. They’ll get book recommendations and tips for accessing books for free at home.

What can children read for their Challenge?
Anything they enjoy! The Challenge is all about reading for fun, so all reading counts, from fiction and non-fiction to audiobooks, comics, joke books, graphic novels, e-books, and poetry.

    Why take part?

    • The Challenge significantly improves children’s reading skills and confidence
    • Taking part can prevent the summer ‘dip’ in reading and can aid the successful transition to new year groups and key stages
    • During last year’s Challenge, children read over 14 million books!
    • 95% of children said they read more books after joining the Summer Reading Challenge
    • It’s simple and free for every child to take part, and many libraries run accompanying free activities for families throughout the holidays

We hope your child enjoys taking part in the National Summer Reading Challenge and can't wait to hear how they get on!
