Our Choirs have enjoyed a busy end to the year performing at the Christmas Concert and also in the Carol Service. Our Micro Choir added a further engagement when they sang at Myton Hospice in their Service of Remembrance. The boys were the most wonderful ambassadors for the school in performing two pieces the 'Three Wise Men and 'Carol of the Bells'.
It was with the greatest of sadness we learned that our former colleague, Mrs Appleyard had passed away on Tuesday. Mrs Appleyard worked in the Junior School for 21 years, most latterly supporting boys when they were isolating due to Covid restrictions.
Thursday's Christmas Concert provided the fillip we all needed to bring some much needed Christmas cheer. The boys were on top form reminding us just how much talent there is in the Junior School.
No doubt our Year 6 boys are feeling glad to have finished the entrance exam. We were delighted to discover that a record number had been called for scholarship interview and to attend the scholarship day when the boys are put through their paces by the Senior School's academic departments. The boys' success is testament to all the high-quality teaching over the last four years. We look forward to hearing from the Senior School when scholarships for September are announced.
Our assembly theme this week echoed the message across most schools with the start of anti-bullying week. It was good to see so many boys coming into school dressed in odd socks. Just as all the sock combinations were different across the school, the message was that people are similarly unique and differences should be celebrated.
On Wednesday we hosted our Remembrance Service attended by many of our Year 5 parents. It is always a most poignant reminder of why we fall silent and remember those who served their country and gave their lives during our recent wars. Etched on the walls are the names of the young men from Warwick School who gave their lives in service of their country. It is impossible to read the list and not to appreciate the most profound impact the news of their deaths must have had on the school community. The long-standing teachers of that time would have taught many of those who were killed whilst serving. Each and every loss must have been heartfelt. It is also important that boys experience and learn the symbolism and pageantry associated with Remembrance, including the laying of wreaths and playing of the Last Post.
It was good to see the boys returning refreshed and ready for the second half of the term. Judging from my conversations with the boys, they have enjoyed some interesting experiences over the two-week break.
It was a genuine pleasure joining the Year 6 rugby tour for the day in the city of Bath. The boys spent the morning training with the Bath coaches before a picnic lunch near to the Abbey. The boys then acted as the guard of honour welcoming the two teams onto the pitch. They also were invited onto the pitch at half time and were introduced to the crowd as they completed a lap of the pitch.
I managed to join a couple of our Houses as they met to elect the four charities to support over the coming year. Boys were encouraged to make a short presentation to their Houses before they voted to determine a local, national, international and environmental charity. As always, the boys rarely make poor decisions and four most worthy charities have been elected.
There is no doubt that we are now steaming full speed ahead in one of the busiest parts of the term. Fixtures are coming thick and fast allowing many of the boys a chance to represent the school.
We were very fortunate on Friday to host the author Cressida Cowell. Cressida spoke to the boys about how her experiences spending entire summers on a remote Scottish island helped fire her imagination to write her 'How to Train a Dragon' series. The house she stayed in had no electricity and together with her siblings, they amused themselves in boats, climbing rocks and exploring caves. Given that the Vikings had visited these islands in the past, it was not surprising how ideas formed in her head to fuel her future stories.
With two weeks now in the rear-view mirror, the memory of our summer holidays is beginning to wane. Now that the baseline assessments have been completed, we are now very much focused on teaching and learning. This week’s newsletter is somewhat a ‘bumper edition’ as last Friday’s newsletter was changed to reflect the tragic news from Balmoral.
